Kids Health food reviews: Honest Kids beverages
We all know about drinking enough fluids daily to keep us hydrated and healthy. And if we can make our children drink just water, that’s the best thing ever. Next comes milk, and then.. juice? I hesitate to have my daughter drink juice, even though she loves it more than water. It’s the sweet flavor that attracts her to it, and that’s exactly what I don’t want her to have too much of.
I find that some flavors of juice drinks and children’s beverages have so much sugar they’re no better than soda!
The maker of Honest Tea beverages http://www.honesttea.com/products/kids/ has new organic products in the market for children’s beverages- Honest Kids. The beverages come in three flavors: , Berry Berry Good Lemonade and Tropical Tango Punch and have an MSRP of $3.99 - $5.99 for eight, 6.75 ounce pouches. Each pouch contains only 40 calories and just 10 grams of sugar, which are less than half of what most children’s juice varieties have. The sweetener is organic cane sugar, and not fruit juice, and the ingredients also list water. Honest Kids is NOT a juice concentrate, so there is no “all natural 100% juice”. Is that a good thing? In limited amounts, for me it is. All natural 100% juice (with less sugar) is still better, because of the nutrient and fruit. But in limited amount, my child can drink Honest Kids and I know she won’t go hyperactive from too much sugar.
However, let me warn you. The taste of Honest Kids beverage is mild. Stronger than flavored 1-calorie water, but still a lot milder than juice from concentrate. BUT, Honest Kids beverages have 100 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C, and that’s good enough for me.
My only hang-up about the product is that it comes in a pouch, not a tetrapak. So my daughter has to hold the pouch gingerly at the ends so the juice doesn’t squirt out of the straw.
Overall, I would give Honest Kids beverages a health and taste rating of 3.5/5.
UPDATE: new research shows drinking 100% friut juice is not related to obesity. It is up to the parent to provide moderate amounts of juice, be it 100%, concentrate or the flavored water varieties.
