A children’s garden that teaches about plants
It’s a pocket-size garden by comparison, but this garden tucked in Manhattan’s lower East Side will bring delight and instruction to children.
I’m talking about the newly opened Toyota Children’s Learning Garden, a pocket park at 603 East 11th Street, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
It’s NOT a playground, but a garden. And it’s a place where kids can learn more about plant diversity - for example, what plants grow in the shade or sun; climbing vines and spreaders; shrubs, annuals, and perennials, and many others. I’m sure these are covered in the elementary sciences, but unless the school has a diversity garden, then most of these knowledge would just be in the head. With a park like the Toyota Learning Garden, children will be able to experience a little more of the plant kingdom. See pictures here and here .
I know I benefited from having an elementary subject in horticulture (art and science of the cultivation of plants). You heard it right, in my elementary school. We grew our own vegetables, memorized plant names and their uses, and learned to respect mother earth’s bounty. That began my love and respect for all things growing. Hopefully, our children will cultivate that same love for the earth. I would think that’s the spirit behind the Toyota Children’s Learning Garden.
