Javier Bardem was a hypochondriac teen
Javier Bardem, this year’s Oscar winner for best supporting actor, grew up fearing he was seriously ill.
It started when he was 14, and his head began to ache while he was lying on the couch. “I said to myself. ‘I’m going to die. I’d better call my friends and say goodbye.’ Since then they’ve been used to me saying I have serious health problems.”
Hypochondria is fear of or preoccupation with disease, and the person has morbid attention to his physical body and exaggerates any symptoms no matter how insignificant. The symptoms are real and include headache, belly pain, dizziness, fatigue. Treatment of this medical condition (yes, it is a medical diagnosis) involves getting the patient to realize he has anxiety, not a serious physical disease.
Although Bardem’s fear of disease (hypochondriasis) has toned down over time, the 39-year old actor still feels the need to see a doctor every now and then.
Javier Bardem won the Academy Award for his role in “No Country For Old Men.”
