Some days, motherhood is stressful
*SIGH*
So I just got through a very stressful week at home. My parents were sick for most of this week with some virus that caused a 104-degree fever. That left me, limping on my crutches, taking charge over a preschooler and a newborn while hubby was away at a conference. My son has been suffering from congestion too, so you can imagine how it broke my heart every time he would gasp for air as be breastfed. On top of that, I’ve felt his temperature go up several times but I thought he was simply overheated. I did check his rectal temp but (I guess) I didn’t slip the thermometer into the rectum enough and got a normal read. When I checked it on Saturday (when he was still hot) it he was 100.6 degF! With a sinking feeling, I realize he must have had a fever for several days and I missed it.
That brought us to the ER in panic. Fever of 100.2 degF and higher is a concern with newborns his age - less than 2 months - because their immune systems are still immature and they can’t fight infections yet. So the doctor did a battery of procedures. But my chubby little son’s vein won’t cooperate and the nurses couldn’t stick him for blood, and he won’t give urine with the catheter.
At the end of the night, I heaved a sigh of relief. There are no infections, and his fever has gone.
Today, the stress hit me, and I should take care of myself now…
What do you think I should do?
